WSUS Client FAQ: see WSUS Client FAQ
General WUS FAQ:
A. You can download WSUS 3.0 from Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsserver/wsus). Prerequisites include MMC 3.0, .NET Framework 2.0 and the Microsoft Report Viewer 2005.
A. Yes, WSUS is a no-cost download from Microsoft. However, you must have a valid Windows Server 2003 license for the WSUS server itself, as well as Windows Client Access Licenses (CALs) for each machine updated by WSUS. This is an important consideration for organizations that run Windows desktop operating systems, but non-Windows server operating systems such as Novell or Linux. Additionally, if you decide against the free MSDE/WMSDE database and instead use SQL Server 2000, you also need SQL licenses (either per-processor, or CALs for each WSUS-managed computer). Be sure to discuss your unique licensing needs with a Microsoft Partner or your Microsoft Account Representative to ensure compliance.
A. (Updated Dec. 18, 2006) WSUS provides updates to the following Microsoft products:
Note: The inclusion of Microsoft Codename Max and Zune in the WSUS Products and Classifications UI is unintentional. Q. Where can I find the wuau.adm file that includes all the new WSUS options? A. There are several places to find this file. It's available on every XP SP2 machine in the WINDOWS\INF folder. Additionally, you can find this file on the WSUS server itself. Browse to the the %ProgramFiles%\Update Services\Selfupdate\au\x86 folder and locate the wucltui.cab file under your language folder (en=English). Open the wucltui.cab cabinet file to find the updated wuau.adm file.Q. How can I roll back to the Automatic Update Client configured for SUS version from the WSUS Server Version? A. Just point the Automatic Update Client to the SUS Server and it will use the [Self Update] mechanism to revert back as SUS Client instead of WSUS Client.Q. Where can I download the .NET Framework SP1 for WSUS?
A. WSUS 2.0 requires the .NET Framework 1.1 SP1. Get this from Windows Update, or download it at: Q. Where can I download the .Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version on Windows 2000 for WSUS? A. Go to Data Access Downloads on the MSDN Web site to download MDAC.Q. Where can I download the BITS 2.0/WInHTTP 5.1 updates for WSUS 2.0? A. WSUS requires BITS 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 packages, which you must download before installing WSUS. There are different versions for Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003 as follows:

WUS requires that the installation drive and the system partition are formatted with NTFS.Q. What version of IIS is required for WSUS 2.0? And do I really need IIS, or can I use Apache? A. If you run WSUS on Windows 2000, you require IIS 5, if you are running WSUS in Windows Server 2003, you require IIS 6. IIS is used to administer your WSUS server. Running WSUS is not supported on any platform other than Windows Server 2000 or 2003, although APIs exist to enable you to build some degree of cross platform support.Q. Note that SQL 2005 is optional and WSUS 2.0 SP1 still installs MSDE 2000 by default (SP4, which will automatically upgrade an existing instance of SP3 as installed by the original release of WSUS 2.0).
